Micky van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Run at New Home Ground

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
