Leeds United manager Daniel Farke felt Man City shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma feigned an knock in the second period of their Premier League encounter
Leeds manager Daniel Farke has accused City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of simulating a knock to "exploit the regulations" during their top-flight match at Etihad Stadium
The visitors made the worst possible beginning with Phil Foden scoring within the opening 60 seconds, prior to Josko Gvardiol extended the hosts' lead before the half-time break
However, the visitors rallied after the interval after a change of strategy and formation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting immediately following the restart
And with City visibly having difficulty to deal with the adjustments moments before Lukas Nmecha equalized, home keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma collapsed to get attention, enabling manager Pep Guardiola to summon his team to the sideline and deliver fresh directions during the 120 seconds play was stopped for
"Everybody understands why he collapsed," Farke commented
"It is not the obvious issue. Why he fell it was clear. It is within the regulations. It is smart. If I like it? If it's within the sense of sportsmanship? If it should be like this I will keep to myself. It is up to the governing bodies to determine a solution"
"I ask the assistant referee at this point if you want to take action. Our hands are tied"
"Unless we teach our footballers in football what to do in regards of fair play and sportsmanship and everything and if we simply attempt to exploit regulations and even do a simulated knock in order to do an additional team talk, it is not what I approve of personally. But if it is allowed by the regulations I can't complain"
Foden's injury-time decisive goal condemned Leeds to a sixth consecutive loss in seven top-flight matches to place them eighteenth in the Premier League, with only bottom club Wolverhampton having notched less Premier League strikes this season
However, Farke, who has been criticised for a lack of adventure especially around changes, was almost rewarded for a bold choice at the half-time that almost reversed their fortunes
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Phil Foden, stated that his team were only capable to reorganize after Pep Guardiola's touchline meeting with his players
"At half-time we were in command. Second half they emerged, pressed us a lot higher, they put two in attack and altered the setup a bit," commented Foden
"We really struggled to get hold of the match. We got together on the edge of the field and adjusted a couple of aspects and it got better from there. That little break was vital to get things right"
The most recent time Leeds United suffered four straight successive top-flight matches was in 2022-23, when their season concluded with demotion
However, while Farke said that "our overriding emotion is frustration", their second period display offered sufficient proof to indicate they are capable of arresting their current run and moving up the table
"Displaying such a performance should give us plenty of confidence. If we demonstrate such spirit and togetherness we have a great chance to win the points," the manager continued
"We had the belief prior to the game, during the fixture and following the game. Or else you cannot respond with a performance like that. We have strong togetherness and determination in the dressing room"
Commenting on BBC Radio 5 Live, ex- Celtic forward Chris Sutton said: "Everyone expected it to be a straightforward victory for Manchester City, but it has been far from comfortable in this second half"
"Leeds United can derive a lot from this display with the way they have performed in this second half"
"Then came Daniel Farke's adjustments, who is frequently questioned for not being as proactive as he ought to be. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was introduced and roughed up the Manchester City defenders"
"It appeared like it could be a massive turning point in Leeds' campaign, but City found a bit of quality. They escaped with one this evening"
